Douglas Fir

Also known as Columbian/Oregon Pine this is without doubt the most versatile boat building softwood available.

Origin
Grown on the North West Pacific coast of the USA, Robbins Timber offer the very best quality available. Produced from our two mills in Oregon the ideal soil conditions have historically produced superb logs.

Advantages
This beautiful Redish Brown timber is available in both long lengths and wide widths. Mostly clear of knots and generally close grained it machines well and accepts most finishes. With an average weight of 530kg/m3 Douglas Fir has a very good strength to weight ratio.


Sizes available
Thicknesses from 1" up to 4". Widths up to 12" & occasionally up to 16". Lengths on average up to 18ft however we specially import 24ft lengths in certain sizes for mast and deck construction.

Main Uses: Masts, Spars, Gunwales, Stringers, Decking, Rubbing Strakes and all types of interior fitting out.

   

Western Red Cedar

An extremely durable and light weight timber for strip planking
and boat building

Origin
Grown on the North West Pacific coast of the USA in particular in British Columbia we offer kiln dried prime quality productions with very fine fibres.

Advantages
This Pinkish - Dark Brown timber is available in long lengths and average widths. Mostly clear of knots and very straight grained it machines well and accepts most finishes. With an average weight of 390kg/M3 Western Red Cedar has an exceptionally good strength to weight ratio. Ideal when used in conjunction with West System epoxy for racing and canoe craft. Robbins Timber provide both Standard (bead& Cove) & Rapid Strip (Tongue & Groove) profiles in various sizes.


Sizes available
Thicknesses from 1" up to 4". Widths up to 8" & occasionally 10" Lengths on average up to a maximum of 18ft however we occasionally obtain 20ft lengths for strip planking.

Main Uses: Strip Planking , Laminating, Masts, Spars, Stringers, and all types of interior fitting out.

   

Yellow Cedar

A very durable timber used for boatbuilding, boat decking and joinery.

Origin
Grown between Alaska and Southern Oregon, Yellow Cedar is mostly sourced in British Columbia. Supply is fairly limited, but we are usually able to offer a good length specification in a variety of thicknesses.

Advantages
Yellow Cedar is consistent pale yellow in colour, and a little heavier than both western red cedar and sitka spruce. It has exceptional resistance to weather and insects, and when left uncoated takes on a beautiful silver colour. Decay resistance is very high which makes it desirable for boatbuilding – it is often used for planking and decks. It has exceptional properties of very tight grain and even texture making it very easy to work.


Sizes available
Thicknesses from 1" up to 4". Widths generally up to 8". Lengths on average up to a maximum of 18ft however we occasionally obtain 20ft lengths for strip planking.

Main Uses: Boat planking, Strip Planking, boat decking, furniture. It has also been considered one of the best timbers for battery separators.

   

Sitka Spruce

Also known as Silver/Tideland Spruce this timber was the traditional choice for mast and spar construction although in more recent times has become difficult to obtain in the quality required for such uses.

Origin
Grown on the North West Pacific coast of the USA & parts of Canada we are very pleased to offer kiln dried prime boards of exceptional quality.

Advantages
This Creamy White timber is available in long lengths and good widths. Clear of knots and with very fine & straight grain it machines very well. With an average weight of 450kg/M3 Sitka Spruce has the very best strength to weight ratio, and is the perfect choice for Mast/Spar construction.
